Does 'Hare Lip' mean the same as 'Cleft Lip'?
This term refers to the rabbit's lip, which has a natural cleft in the center of its lip. Professionals rarely use this term because it is an insensitive and inaccurate term. "Cleft lip" is the correct term for this condition.

Will the child be normal after treatment?
The aim of treating children with cleft lip and/or palate is to achieve normal looking and normal sounding well adjusted individuals. The cleft child is likely to have the best possible result if treated by an organized, well trained multidisciplinary team. When treated at the proper age, normally they have good results. They will be like normal children except small scar on lip and will need supervision till adolescence. In addition they might need appropriate intervention by the Plastic Surgeon, the Dentist, the ENT surgeon and the Speech Therapist at appropriate intervals according to individual needs during childhood and adolescence.

Will my Baby have normal intelligence?
The children with cleft lip and/or palate have normal mental development. If treated early and properly, they grow like normal children. In rare instances if the cleft is a part of a cluster of other problems, learning disabilities can occur.

Why did my Baby have a Cleft?
The honest answer to this question is we don't know for sure. But be assured it was not because you did something wrong during pregnancy. Scientists have learned that there are many possible causes for clefts including Genetic and environmental causes. Research is under way to discover more about these causes. Sometimes clefts occur in combination with other problems, which are associated with a syndrome.

How Many Babies Are Born With Clefts similar to my baby each year?
Clefts are among the most common problems found in newborn babies. Approximately one in 600 babies is born with a cleft every year in India.

Can my Baby feed normally?
Some babies with clefts have very little or no problems in feeding, others have more difficulty. Use of 'paladai' or spoon and careful positioning of the baby are helpful. The cleft child tends to swallow a lot of air and gets tired soon while feeding. The baby needs frequent small feeds and needs to be burped.

Will my Baby's Teeth grow normally?
If the cleft is partial and affects only the lip, the teeth will not be affected. If the cleft affects the gums where teeth erupt, there can be defective or absence of one or more teeth. The relationship of upper jaw teeth and lower jaw teeth may be distorted which can be corrected either by orthodontic treatment or surgery.

Will my Baby Have Trouble learning to speak?
If the cleft affects only the lip, speech problems are unlikely. 80% of children operated for cleft palate will have normal speech; however, they may need the help of a speech pathologist. 10-15% patients may need an additional operation to improve speech. The goal is to help the child develop normal speech as soon as possible.
